Three Dougherty Comprehensive High School students earned awards for the Dougherty County Bar Association's Law Day Essay Contest.

Belinda Odom, Jasper Wheeler, and DeAnrae Carney's essays were chosen for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place awards, respectively. Dougherty Comprehensive High School swept all categories of the competition. 

The medallions were presented to them at the Law Day luncheon held Wednesday, April 12 at noon at the Merry Acres restaurant on Dawson road. Judge Phipps, a leader of the civil rights movement in Albany and retiring judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals, was the speaker.

On May 1 the United States officially recognizes Law Day. It is meant to reflect on the role of law in the foundation of the country and to recognize its importance for society. It is a national day to celebrate the rule of law and its contributions to the freedoms Americans enjoy. Law Day had its origin in 1957, when American Bar Association (ABA) President Charles S. Rhyne envisioned a special day for celebrating our legal system.  This year’s topics were concerning the 14thAmendment.
