Congressman Sanford Bishop was in Albany on Friday to recognize some very crafty students.

Many high school students from the 29 counties that make up the 2nd Congressional District entered the 36th Congressional Art Competition.

Bishop announced the winners at the Albany Arts Council on Friday night.

Khalil Brown, a senior at Dougherty High School, won first place for his untitled drawing that he said took him about 10 to 15 hours in total to finish.

"It means a lot to know that it's meaningful to more people," said Brown.

Now Brown’s work will have displayed for a year in Cannon Tunnel which a busy underground walkway to the capitol building in Washington D.C. from the house office buildings.

Bishop said competitions like this are important to keeping arts alive and going in the youth.

"Young people make up maybe 30% of our population but they’re 100% of our future so we ought to encourage them and support them and nurture their talent," said Bishop.

The Albany Museum of Art board sponsored Brown to be able to fly and stay in D.C when the ceremony is held in June for him to see his work officially being put on display.
