  The Georgia Department of Economic Development, along with the Georgia Economic Developers Association recognized Georgia’s 2017 “Small Business Rock Stars.” GDEcD and GEDA hosted a luncheon where four Georgia companies were honored for being an outstanding, unique and impactful small business.

• Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony a Huge Success

  On Feb. 25th, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame honored eight highly accomplished athletes during their annual induction ceremony held at the historic Macon City Auditorium. The group included football player Keith Brooking, golfer Laura Coble, tennis coach Manuel Diaz, football and track athlete Willie Gault, basketball player Matt Harpring, football player Garrison Hearst, athletic leader/golf coach Liz Murphey and football player Jeff Saturday.

• GSW to Name Public Safety Building in Honor of Fallen Officers Nick Smarr and Jody Smith

  The names of fallen police officers Nick Smarr and Jody Smith will be memorialized on the building that is home to Georgia Southwestern State University’s Public Safety Department. At their monthly meeting in Atlanta, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved a proposal from GSW Interim President Charles Patterson to name the building the “Nicholas Smarr and Jody Smith Memorial Building.”

  The results of the fourth quarter Georgia CEO survey suggests that Georgia business leaders feel more optimistic about the current business conditions in Georgia compared to the previous surveys. The purpose of the surveys is to better understand how general business conditions are impacting Georgia CEO subscribers on a quarterly basis. Georgia CEO partners with the Bureau of Business Research and Economic Development (BBRED), a member of the College of Business at Georgia Southern University, to prepare, distribute and analyze the survey.

With a principal focus on “Georgia A State of Mind,” the 2017 Class of Leadership Georgia will travel to Brasstown Valley, Jesup, Jekyll Island, Perry and Brasselton.

• Southwest Georgia Toys for Tots: Community Helps Campaign Exceed Goal

  The Southwest Georgia Toys for Tots Program wrapped up its 2016 drive with a record number of toys donated. The annual campaign began Sept. 30, 2016 aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany and ended with the last bag filled with games, dolls and puzzles distributed, Dec. 24, 2016. In total almost 50,000 toys were collected.

Mosely, superintendent for the Dougherty County School System, told the Dougherty County Board of Education that he will resign his position at the end of the 2016-2017 school year for health and family reasons. Following a career that spanned nearly 50 years, Dr. Mosely came out of retirement in 2014 to take on the job of superintendent and turn the Dougherty County School System around.
