With a strong emphasis on the individual, the fitness programs at PT Gym offer personalized attention outside of one-on-one personal training.  For example, members can participate in small group programs that are supervised by certified trainers or sign up for online nutritional programs that can help manage their diet.

"While a strong percentage of our member do opt for personal training, we offer a variety of group fitness programs including boot camps and PTGX, which is like P90X but uses more varied equipment," said PT Gym owner Perry Buchanan.

"We are always looking to innovate.  We don't buy into hype.  We stick with credible programs that are safe and effective, but we innovate to keep it enjoyable."

According to Buchanan, group fitness programs are coming back into vogue.  In the 1970s, regular aerobics was the most popular program.  Currently, it is the more intense boot camp-type programs.  In addition to PTGX, PT GYM's small group "personal-training" programs include Pilate's reformer and kinesis.

"We're always adding different classes.  We just added back our Kids Power Hour class that caters to kids from seven to 13 years old.  It's a fitness class that also helps benefit sports performance," Buchanan said.

Holding Our Own

Buchanan opened PT Gym, which stands for Personal Training, in 2002.  In 2010, he purchased the two-acre shopping center in which PT Gym is located.  The 12,000 square foot gym has 12 to 15 employees, including many professionals who are certified through credible programs such as the American College of Sports Medicine.

In 2012, PT Gym maintained its core membership although new sales were down some.  Sales in total were in line with prior year.

"I'd say we are holding our own given the economy.  I get the feeling things are trying to pick up," Buchanan said.

The majority of PT Gym members are individuals and families.  A few local companies buy memberships for employees.  In addition to its group fitness programs, PT Gym continually adds and upgrades its workout equipment.  It offers strength training and cardio equipment as well as a pro shop.

Services Tailored to Each Member

PT Gym offers a number of member services including a general health assessment and fitness evaluation.  The evaluation, which includes body composition, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance and aerobic capacity, is used to determine the optimal fitness program for each member.

The gym's certified nutrition specialists offer education and counseling on ways to meet nutritional and health goals.  The service is especially beneficial for members who are dealing with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or weight management issues.
