Albany Technical College has received a $2,500 donation for its Nursing Program from former Georgia State Senator Freddie Powell Sims, recipient of the Lemuel Griffin Community Service Award.

During a recognition ceremony held Monday, October 12, 2026, in Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital's Willson Board Room, Sims distributed the proceeds from the award among Albany Technical College, Georgia Southwestern State University, Albany State University, and her alma mater, Fort Valley State University.

Dr. Morris Clarington, Dean of Academic Affairs for Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, accepted the donation on behalf of Albany Technical College. The full $2,500 donation will be used to provide scholarship support that directly benefits Albany Technical College nursing students as they continue their coursework and clinical preparation and work toward careers in nursing.

"This entire gift will go directly to scholarship support for our nursing students as they pursue their education and prepare for careers in nursing," said Dr. Morris Clarington, Dean of Academic Affairs for Nursing and Allied Health Sciences at Albany Technical College. "Nursing education is demanding, and financial support can help students stay focused on completing their training. Ms. Sims' generosity is an investment in our students and in the patients, families, and communities they will serve."

Albany Technical College's Nursing Program prepares students for the knowledge, skills, clinical responsibilities, and professional expectations required in the nursing field. Scholarship support made possible by this contribution will place resources directly behind students working to complete their education and enter the healthcare workforce in Southwest Georgia and beyond.
