The Darton Health Professions Foundation is proud to announce the award of more than $62,000 in scholarships to 36 students for the Fall 2026 semester, continuing its mission to expand educational access and strengthen the future professional workforce across Southwest Georgia.

The scholarship recipients represent a broad geographic and academic cross-section of the region served by the Foundation, including students from Dougherty, Lee, Mitchell, Thomas, Crisp, Sumter, Decatur, Worth, Terrell counties and surrounding communities. Students are pursuing degrees in education, music, nursing, psychology, biology, computer science, and other fields, reflecting both the diversity of the applicant pool and the workforce needs of the region.

The Foundation's scholarship review process includes a comprehensive and impartial evaluation of each application, with awards based on merit, financial need, donor intent, and student potential.

"It is a grueling and competitive process," said Randae Davis, Executive Director of the Foundation. "We had more than 850 applications this semester, and the committee ultimately had to narrow that pool to fewer than 40 recipients that we collectively agreed upon. Behind so many of those applications are extremely compelling stories of perseverance, determination, and genuine financial need."

Frances Carr, a member of the Foundation's Board of Directors, praised the integrity and care of the review process and its impact on students.

"We trust the committee to review the scholarship applications thoroughly, and I was told that most of the recipients' essays are read no fewer than six times before the process is complete," Carr said. "That gives me a great appreciation for the depth and thoroughness of the Foundation's review process. It is evident that a tremendous amount of time and care goes into ensuring every applicant receives a fair and thoughtful evaluation. These scholarships have a meaningful impact on our students and their ability to achieve their educational goals."

Carr added that the Foundation's support continues to have a lasting influence on student success and persistence in higher education. Many previous scholarship recipients are now working throughout the region and remain committed to giving back through their professions and community involvement.

Some of this year's recipients have overcome significant personal, financial, and educational obstacles. Their stories underscore the transformative role scholarships can play in helping students remain enrolled, complete their degrees, and ultimately contribute to the communities they call home.

Dr. Sarah Brinson, a Foundation Board Member and Dean of the Darton College of Health Professions, highlighted the diversity of applicants and the real-life impact of the scholarships.

"The pool of applicants is amazing and a true testament to what we are all about," Brinson said. "I hear stories from students in Ochlocknee, Pelham, Sylvester, Cordele, Shellman, Cuthbert, Climax, Blackshear, Atlanta, Americus, Douglasville, and Griffin, with majors in computer science, music, nursing, psychology, and more. Hearing their stories, I realized just how much these scholarships change lives and help students and their families overcome real struggles."

She also noted the personal connections found throughout the applications, including students known through local programs and educators whose dedication to their students stood out.

"Every scholarship represents far more than financial assistance; it represents hope, opportunity, and an investment in the future of our communities," Davis said. "This semester's recipients remind us that talent and determination exist in every corner of Southwest Georgia. We are not only supporting students financially and academically; we are helping shape the next generation of professionals and community leaders."

The Foundation's commitment to students extends well beyond the initial scholarship award. It strives to build meaningful relationships with recipients by providing ongoing guidance, financial support, mentorship, academic advising, and financial planning. Many recipients remain connected to the Foundation throughout their academic journeys and credit that individualized support as an important part of their educational and professional success.
