The Albany Area Arts Council opens Collegium: A Georgia Southwestern State University Visual Arts Faculty Exhibition on September 3, the first in a new back to school series featuring the art faculty of colleges and universities across Southwest Georgia.

A collegium is a group whose members hold roughly equal standing and work together for the common good. The word was chosen deliberately. The exhibition offers an overview of the creative practice of the Georgia Southwestern faculty, in ceramics, glass, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

"The title of this show describes well the community and culture of the program; seeing each other more as family than colleagues, they are able to nurture, challenge, and encourage each other in both the classroom and studio," the faculty write in their group statement. "We hope you will enjoy this exhibition in the spirit it was created, and we welcome you into our expanding Collegium."

Exhibiting faculty are Laurel Robinson, Keaton Wynn, Charles Wells, and Justin Hodges.

The Arts Council plans to feature a different regional university each fall, both to bring the region's art faculties together and to give Albany audiences and students a look at the work being made across Southwest Georgia.

"There are remarkable faculty teaching across South Georgia, and few occasions for them to be in one room together," said Nicole Willis, the Council's executive director. "Our goal is to create regular opportunities for camaraderie and professional inspiration among the many people and institutions driving creative work across our region."

Collegium runs September 3 through October 29 in the gallery of the historic Carnegie Library. The exhibition and the opening reception are free and open to all, with support from the City of Albany.
