Albany Technical College Holds Ribbon Cutting for New Campus Walking Trail

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Friday, August 14th, 2026

Albany Technical College held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new campus walking trail on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 10:00 AM on the Albany Technical College campus.

The new walking trail is the next step in the college’s broader wellness initiative, which began with the opening of the Albany Technical College Wellness Center in Freedom Hall last year. Together, the Wellness Center and walking trail are designed to support the physical, mental, and overall well-being of students, faculty, staff, and the campus community.

The project continues the work supported through Albany Technical College’s Student Wellness: Mental, Academic and Physical Preparedness initiative, also known as M.A.P.P. The M.A.P.P. project is a PBI Formula Grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and is designed to improve the overall well-being of ATC students by strengthening support for their personal, academic, mental, and physical success.

Through the grant, Albany Technical College has focused on student wellness initiatives, mentoring, proactive advising for first-year, first-generation, and healthcare students, tutoring support, and dedicated services that address the physical, mental, and academic needs of students. The walking trail extends that work by adding an outdoor wellness resource that encourages movement, healthy habits, and daily wellness on campus.

“This walking trail is more than a path around campus. It is another visible step in supporting the whole student and the whole employee,” said Dr. Emmett L. Griswold, President of Albany Technical College. “When we opened the Wellness Center, we made a commitment to continue building a campus culture that values health, balance, and personal well-being. The walking trail helps extend that commitment outdoors and gives our college community another meaningful way to take care of themselves.”

The walking trail includes two route options. The longer route is approximately 1.21 miles, and the shorter route is approximately 0.73 miles. The routes are designed to provide flexible walking options for users based on time, ability, and personal fitness goals.

“From the beginning, the goal of M.A.P.P. has been to create practical, accessible resources that help students strengthen their mental, academic, and physical preparedness,” said Brittany Dees, Project Director for Mental, Academic, and Physical Preparedness at Albany Technical College. “The walking trail continues that work by giving students, faculty, and staff another opportunity to move, recharge, and make wellness part of their daily routine while they are on campus.”

The Wellness Center and walking trail are part of a bigger effort to make wellness more visible and accessible at Albany Technical College. The college’s wellness initiative encourages healthy habits, stress reduction, physical activity, and stronger connections across the campus community.
