The global impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) was on full display at the 2026 DITSALA International Cup, as Albany State University (ASU) graduate MiMi Harris joined an elite group of  student-athletes representing six HBCUs in one of the premier international women’s volleyball competitions.

Held June 1–13 in Gaborone, Botswana, the DITSALA International Cup brought together top collegiate athletes from the United States and national teams from across Southern Africa. The tournament, hosted by Bring It Promotions in partnership with the Botswana Volleyball Federation, is designed to promote athletic excellence while fostering cultural exchange and global engagement.

Harris, a Phoenix, Arizona native and May 2026 graduate of Albany State University, was one of just 16 student-athletes selected to compete. She represented not only ASU, but also the rich legacy of HBCU athletics and academic excellence on an international stage.

“Out of all the places in the world that playing this sport has taken me, I believe Africa will always be my favorite.”
-MiMi Harris, Albany State University Alumna (’26)

More than a competition, the DITSALA International Cup provided a transformative cultural experience. Participants engaged in youth volleyball clinics, visited primary schools, and connected with local communities throughout Botswana. Harris described the experience as both culturally enriching and personally impactful.

“Volleyball has taken me all around the world—England, France, Spain, Italy, Costa Rica, and now Africa. Africa gave me more than I imagined. It gave me an opportunity to compete globally, build relationships, and experience something new while connecting with students and communities.”
-MiMi Harris, Albany State University Alumna (’26)

One of the most meaningful aspects of the journey for Harris was sharing the experience with her family.

“It’s a blessing to give two of the women that helped raise me the opportunity to see our motherland.”
-MiMi Harris, Albany State University Alumna (’26)

Harris’ selection reflects her outstanding career at Albany State University, where she distinguished herself as a student-athlete, campus leader, and role model. After transferring to ASU in 2023, she earned a degree in Health and Human Performance while demonstrating excellence in leadership, academics, and service.

During her time at ASU, Harris served as Second Attendant for Miss Albany State University and Secretary of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She also created meaningful engagement opportunities through initiatives like “Favor Fridays” and co-hosted the “Locker Room Hours” series, addressing topics such as mental health, life after sports, and financial literacy.

Her participation in the DITSALA International Cup underscores the continued impact of HBCUs in developing globally competitive student-athletes and leaders. The tournament featured multiple HBCU teams, highlighting the depth of talent and leadership cultivated at these institutions.

As she begins the next chapter of her journey, Harris leaves a lasting legacy at Albany State University, one defined by commitment, tenacity, and service. Her story reflects the power of HBCUs to shape leaders who excel not only in athletics, but also in their communities and across the world.
