Ten members of the Albany Young Marines, ranging in age from 9 to 16 years old, recently traveled to Washington, D.C., for a five-day educational and service-focused trip centered on honoring America's veterans and experiencing the nation's history firsthand.
During the trip, the Young Marines participated in several significant events and visited some of the country's most historic sites.
The group proudly marched in the National Memorial Day Parade, serving as banner carriers throughout the parade route alongside participants from across the nation. The Young Marines also assisted with the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation Memorial Day Service, helping with event setup and greeting guests. During the ceremony, the Albany Young Marines presented a commemorative wreath sponsored by the Albany Young Marines and American Legion Post 30 of Albany.
In addition to their service activities, the Young Marines visited many of Washington's most important landmarks, including the White House, the U.S. Capitol, the National Archives, where they viewed America's founding documents, Arlington National Cemetery, and the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia.
"This trip provided our Young Marines with an incredible opportunity to work together as a team, honor the sacrifices of our veterans, and experience firsthand the history of our nation," said Adriana Crump, trip organizer. "As America celebrates the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding, it is important for our youth to understand the values, service, and sacrifices that have shaped our country. These experiences help bring that history to life in a way that cannot be taught in a classroom."
The Albany Young Marines would like to thank the many local supporters, veterans, families, community organizations, and donors whose generosity helped make the trip possible. Their support allowed these young leaders to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime experience while representing Albany and Southwest Georgia on a national stage.
The Albany Young Marines continue their mission of developing leadership, citizenship, and character in young people through community service, educational activities, and leadership training.
