Albany Civil Rights Institute to Host Freedom School Summer Camp

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Friday, June 12th, 2026

The ACRI is proud to announce that it will host the Freedom School Summer Camp, a dynamic program designed to inspire young scholars through literacy, leadership, and cultural affirmation. Rooted in the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement and inspired by the 1964 Freedom Summer, the CDF Freedom Schools program provides more than academic enrichment—it creates a movement for educational equity, justice, and hope.

Through a research-based, multicultural curriculum, scholars will experience a literacy-rich environment that celebrates their identities, strengthens their reading skills, and connects learning to civic engagement and social action. The program’s holistic model also emphasizes family involvement, servant leadership, and health and wellness.

Forty scholars, grades K-12, will setup camp Monday - Friday, 8am to 3pm, beginning June 15th and ending July 24th. Each day begins with Harambee, a joyful gathering that builds community and reminds scholars of their shared strength and purpose. With caring mentors, culturally relevant books, and engaging enrichment activities, the Freedom School Summer Camp will help children grow as confident readers and leaders.

“The CDF Freedom Schools Program is not just about education; it is about liberation, equity, and hope.” Craig E. Moore, Executive Director of the ACRI, affirms. By selecting the Albany Civil Rights Institute as a grantee, that mission will come to life as scholars are encouraged to dream boldly, lead courageously, and embrace their heritage.
