Wednesday, March 11th, 2026
“Rhapsody in Blue,” one of the most recognizable and beloved American musical compositions of the 20th century, will be featured in the Albany Symphony Orchestra’s (ASO) upcoming concert showcasing the work of acclaimed composer George Gershwin. The ASO will be joined by renowned pianist Kevin Cole, widely regarded as the world’s foremost interpreter of Gershwin’s music.
“It is a wonderful privilege and rare opportunity to showcase a guest artist of Kevin Cole’s caliber. His unique talent and expertise in the music of Gershwin will give southwest Georgians the unique experience of hearing a world-class artist performing live with our orchestra on the stage of the historic Albany Municipal Auditorium,” said Dr. Claire Fox Hillard, ASO Music Director and Conductor.
Known as “America’s Pianist,” Cole has delighted audiences through performances with orchestras around the world, prompting accolades from some of the most respected critics in America. Howard Reich, arts critic for the Chicago Tribune wrote, “When Cole sits down at the piano, you would swear Gershwin himself was at work. Cole stands as the best Gershwin pianist in America today.”
The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 20 at the Albany Municipal Auditorium. Earlier that day, the auditorium will be filled with hundreds of elementary school students from across the region as the ASO hosts two performances of Gershwin’s Magic Key.
Gershwin’s Magic Key is the first-ever “educationally entertaining” theatrical symphony concert, exposing young people to the extraordinary life and musical masterpieces of Gershwin, one of the greatest American composers. The ASO, in partnership with Classical Kids LIVE! presents this theatrical production that features Cole, two professional actors, a full live score, period costumes, props, lighting and sound coordination. This is the fourth consecutive year the ASO has teamed with Classical Kids LIVE! to perform an educational symphony concert and play featuring the work of a famous composer. Classical Kids LIVE! is a Chicago-based not-for- profit organization that has collaborated with hundreds of distinguished orchestras around the world to present stories for student and family audiences. More than two million children and adults have enjoyed their magically staged concerts.
Gershwin’s Magic Key tells the story of a chance meeting on the streets of New York City between a poor newspaper boy and the great American composer. The orchestra weaves Gershwin’s greatest hits into the drama as the master composer shares historical anecdotes about his life and musical passion.
The evening concert, which is open to the general public, will also include a performance of Gershwin’s Magic Key. Following a brief intermission, the orchestra will perform more Gershwin music, without the actors, including the entire “Rhapsody in Blue.”
"We encourage families to come experience an unforgettable evening of symphonic music with the Albany Symphony and our amazing guest artist. We know this unique performance will engage and inspire people of all ages, from the first note to the last chord," said Danny James,Albany Symphony Association President.
To ensure everyone in the community has an opportunity to enjoy ASO performances, the symphony is once again not selling tickets to its performances this season. While there is no charge for admission, a donation of $15 is suggested. Donations allow the ASO to provide the annual education concerts to school groups at no charge. All seating for the Friday evening performance is general admission. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a security check and clear bag policy are in effect.
