Albany Area Arts Council Presents A Room of Her Own,
An Invitational Exhibition Celebrating Women’s History Month

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026

The Albany Area Arts Council is proud to present A Room of Her Own, an annual invitational exhibition celebrating Women’s History Month through the work of female artists from Albany and the surrounding region. The exhibition will be on view from March 19 through April 30, with an opening reception on Thursday, March 19.

Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s seminal essay, A Room of One’s Own, the exhibition centers on the idea of creative autonomy — the necessity of space, both physical and conceptual, for women artists to tell their stories fully and on their own terms. For A Room of Her Own, each invited artist is given a discrete gallery space within the Arts Council, transforming it into a personal “room” shaped by her artistic voice, lived experience, and creative process.

This year’s exhibition will feature the work of Maya Johnson, Tram Vi Nguyen, Madye Carter, Britny Wray, and Nia Hawkins, five artists whose practices span a range of materials, approaches, and perspectives. While there is no singular theme imposed on the exhibition, the work collectively reflects facets of womanhood such as identity, memory, resilience, care, and self-definition.

A Room of Her Own is intentionally artist-driven. Participating artists collaborate in the curation and installation of their individual spaces, allowing each gallery to function as a deeply personal environment rather than a traditional group show.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 19 from 6-8 p.m., offering the public an opportunity to meet the artists and engage with them directly through informal conversation and a short Q&A.
