Albany State University Announces Major Campus Technology Transformation

Albany State University (ASU) has launched a sweeping campus-wide technology transformation designed to improve digital access, enhance learning environments, strengthen operational resilience, and modernize campus communication. These upgrades reflect the university’s commitment to providing students, faculty, and the community with a modern, high-performing technological ecosystem. 
 
“We approached this year with a focus on modernization, reliability, and student-centered improvements,” said Dave Killingsworth, Chief Information Officer in Information Technology Services. “These projects are strategic investments in ASU’s future, ensuring our students learn in cutting-edge environments, our systems remain resilient during emergencies, and our campus presents itself with the excellence our community deserves.” 
 
As part of this transformation, ASU has installed new high-resolution digital marquees across all campuses. The upgraded signs replace aging displays with brighter, clearer models that deliver roughly 30 percent greater clarity and more vibrant graphics. The improvements significantly enhance how the university shares announcements, campus events, and emergency information with students, employees, and the surrounding community.  
 
The university has achieved full data center failover capability, a major milestone for operational continuity. In the event of power outages, severe weather, unexpected systems failures, or natural disruptions on either campus, ASU can seamlessly transition essential operations, such as email, online learning, and student records, to a secondary data center. This ensures the university remains functional during crises and protects academic continuity for students and faculty. 
 
To support enhanced learning environments, more than 600 outdated computer lab devices are being replaced with faster machines capable of supporting modern academic software and virtual learning tools. Students can now expect improved speed, reliability, and access to current industry-standard software, significantly reducing technical frustrations and strengthening ASU’s academic infrastructure. 
 
ASU replaced more than 100 aging network switches across both campuses. These upgrades improve the digital backbone that supports Wi-Fi coverage, internet access, and overall campus connectivity. Students and faculty will experience more consistent online performance, faster speeds, and fewer disruptions during peak usage times. 
 
Several of ASU’s largest learning and event spaces are receiving modern technology upgrades, including new audio systems, digital displays, presentation tools, and collaboration features. The improvements support orientations, major lectures, student programs, and public events, while positioning ASU as a regional destination for conferences, civic meetings, and educational gatherings. 
 
The James Pendergrast Memorial Library has added a professional-grade archival scanning lab to help preserve ASU’s historical documents, artwork, maps, and newspapers. The new equipment allows the university to digitize materials more efficiently and safeguard important artifacts for future generations. The scanning lab enhances student and faculty research capabilities and may eventually support community preservation projects. 
 
ASU is launching a comprehensive information governance and data modernization initiative that will improve how the university organizes, analyzes, and uses data. This effort includes updated reporting tools, streamlined data systems, and Microsoft data training for STEM students. The improvements support informed decision-making while preparing graduates for careers in data-driven industries. 
 
Finally, ASU has reinstated the Cisco Networking Academy, giving students access to hands-on training in networking, cybersecurity fundamentals, and IT support. The program prepares students for high-demand technology careers and strengthens the regional pipeline of skilled professionals.
