AAA: Georgia Drivers See Lower Gas Prices, Though Global Risks Persist

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, January 6th, 2026

Georgia drivers are paying less at the pump, yet global market volatility could shift prices again. Recent events in Venezuela have made headlines, but oil prices have stayed fairly steady. U.S. crude closed at $57.32 a barrel on Friday, only 58 cents higher than the week before. Venezuela used to be a major oil producer, but sanctions have kept its exports low for years. Analysts say there’s still enough supply worldwide, though any major disruption could push prices higher. As of Monday, the statewide average has dropped to $2.65 per gallon, though minor day‑to‑day fluctuations are still expected.

Compared to recent benchmarks:

  • It's 3 cents lower than last week
  • 16 cents lower than last month
  • 25 cents lower than this time last year

For those filling up a standard 15-gallon tank, the cost now comes to approximately $39.75.

Nationwide Gas Prices Dip Slightly Amid Global Uncertainty

The national average for regular gasoline has slipped to $2.81 per gallon, down from last week. Crude oil prices remain low, demand is gradually easing, and fuel supplies are stable. And although global events can affect the market, there’s currently no indication they’ll cause any major price shifts right now.

Regional Prices:

The most expensive metro markets in Georgia are Savannah ($2.76), Macon ($2.72), and Atlanta ($2.67).

The least expensive metro markets in Georgia are Gainesville ($2.57), Rome ($2.56), and Catoosa-Dade-Walker ($2.53).

AAA encourages drivers to use the money-saving gas tips listed below.

Money-Saving Tips for Drivers

  • Shop around for gas prices. Drivers can check area gas prices on the Fuel Price Finder.
  • Consider paying in cash instead of using a credit card. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who use a credit card.
  • Enroll in fuel savings programs

Fuel-Saving Tips for Drivers

  • Maintain your vehicle to ensure the best fuel economy. Find a trusted automotive facility at AAA.com/Auto Repair.
  • Combine errands to minimize driving time.
  • Slow down. Fuel economy diminishes significantly at highway speeds above 50 mph. Drive conservatively and avoid aggressive driving. Aggressive acceleration and speeding can reduce fuel economy.
