Albany State University Delivers Essential Online Access and Equity with ASURams Global and Verizon Partnership

Albany State University (ASU) continues to advance its mission of educational access and equity through ASURams Global, its online learning division launched in 2024. Designed to serve students and community members across Southwest Georgia and beyond, ASURams Global is helping to remove digital barriers that stand in the way of academic and professional success.
Through a strategic partnership with Verizon, ASU provided 300 connected laptops—equipped with built-in SIM cards and 5G connectivity—to students and community members who lacked reliable internet technology. The initiative, supported by grant funding, is helping learners complete online coursework and access services from anywhere, without depending on traditional broadband.
“For many of our students, this program is life-changing,” said Dr. Jean-Jacques Medastin, Executive Director of ASURams Global. “People in rural areas or those juggling work and family deserve the same opportunity to learn and grow. We’re proud to deliver access—when, where, and how they need it.”
To highlight the impact of this initiative, Verizon recently produced a customer success story featuring Albany State University’s work in bridging the digital divide through this collaboration.
The video showcases how the connected device program is changing lives in Southwest Georgia.
“Access to high-speed internet is no longer optional—it’s essential,” said Dr. Medastin. “Whether it’s a college student submitting assignments or a high schooler attending virtual classes, internet access directly affects educational outcomes.”
This partnership reflects Albany State’s broader efforts to serve the Southwest Georgia community while expanding its reach nationally and globally. From digital literacy and cybersecurity training to a growing catalog of online degree programs, ASURams Global is preparing learners of all ages to thrive in a connected world.
