Tuesday, July 1st, 2025
Georgia Humanities is pleased to announce that six communities have been selected to host Voices and Votes: Democracy in America, a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition exploring the history and promise of democracy in the United States—just in time for America’s 250th anniversary.
From April 2026 through January 2027, Voices and Votes will travel to Eatonton, Hartwell, Cartersville, Mount Vernon, Brunswick, and Dawson, where each site will host the exhibition for six weeks.
Presented through the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street (MoMS) program, Voices and Votesis based on a major exhibition at the National Museum of American History and examines how Americans have engaged with the democratic process—from revolution and suffrage to civil rights and civic participation today. The exhibition draws connections between past and present and encourages visitors to consider what democracy means in their own communities.
Georgia Humanities will work closely with each site to develop unique exhibit content that connects the national themes of Voices and Votes to local stories of civic life in Georgia. Each host community will also receive seed funding for public programming and educational activities, with opportunities for local fundraising and corporate sponsorship to deepen community investment and impact.
“The 250th anniversary is not only a chance to look back, but also an opportunity to consider how we each contribute to the ongoing story of democracy,” said Mary Wearn, president of Georgia Humanities. “We’re excited to partner with these six host sites to bring Voices and Votes and these important conversations to communities across Georgia.”
