Two DCSS Educators Selected for Prestigious GCSS Summer Learning Institute

Two Dougherty County School System educators have been selected to participate in the 2025 Georgia Council for the Social Studies Summer Learning Institute.

Efashia Mitchell, a second-grade teacher at Turner Elementary School, and Burnell Grant, a fifth-grade teacher at Sherwood Acres Elementary School, were chosen for the professional learning program, which is open to K–12 social studies educators statewide.

The three-day institute will be held June 16–18 and will launch from Macon, Ga. Participants will visit historical sites aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence, including the Jimmy Carter Presidential Campaign Headquarters and the Little White House in Warm Springs.

The program is offered at no cost to members of the Georgia Council for the Social Studies, a professional association founded in 1964 to advocate for, support and celebrate advancement of quality social studies teaching for Georgia students . GCSS is an affiliate of the National Council for the Social Studies and provides learning opportunities, resources, an annual conference and a statewide student social studies fair . Its vision is to prepare students to be knowledgeable, effective decision‑makers and engaged citizens in a globally interdependent world.
