PCOM South Georgia’s Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program is set to increase by 35 students to a total annual class size of 90 after receiving approval from the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. The planned class size increase begins in academic year 2025-2026.

Founded in 2019, PCOM South Georgia focuses on responding to the acute need for more healthcare providers to serve communities of Georgia. The College encourages graduates to practice in rural, underserved areas in Georgia. PCOM South Georgia, an additional teaching location of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), offers the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree and a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences that is offered in a two-year program and an accelerated, one-year preclinical sciences option.

“As Southwest Georgia’s only four-year medical school, our ability to teach and train more students will ultimately provide what Georgia needs: highly skilled, compassionate doctors,” said PCOM President and CEO Jay S. Feldstein, DO ’81. "We greatly appreciate the support of local government and backing of regional hospitals, including Southwell Medical, South Georgia Medical Center, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Archbold Medical Center, and Colquitt Regional Health Systems. Physicians at these hospitals have generously served as preceptors for our students.”

In 2023, PCOM South Georgia’s first class to receive the DO degree, 53 students graduated. In 2024, 49 students received the DO degree. From PCOM’s three locations—the others being in Philadelphia and Suwanee, Georgia—more than 2,000 PCOM alumni are in Georgia.

“Moultrie and the South Georgia community at large have warmly welcomed PCOM South Georgia since its start, and this milestone helps us address the physician shortages that continue to affect the communities we serve,” said Marla D. Golden, DO ’88, dean of the Osteopathic Medicine Program at PCOM South Georgia.

PCOM South Georgia was founded in partnership with local leaders including Jim Matney, CEO of Colquitt Regional Health Systems, where many medical students receive clinical training.

“I am very pleased to see PCOM South Georgia continue to expand its medical school, which has received strong support from various government agencies, including the Colquitt County Board of Commissioners, the City of Moultrie, the Moultrie/Colquitt County Economic Development Authority, and the Hospital Authority," Matney said. "These four entities collaborated to establish the school in 2019, providing both financial and in-kind support, and they reaffirmed their commitment to expanding the medical programs in 2021."
