Albany State University Dental Hygiene Program Achieves Milestones in Education and Community Outreach
Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025
The Albany State University (ASU) Dental Hygiene Program has had an outstanding semester, marking significant achievements in education, community service, and curriculum advancements.
One of the program’s most notable accomplishments is the opportunity for the Class of 2025 to take their clinical board examination at ASU’s Dental Hygiene Clinic. Traditionally, students had to travel to other institutions for this exam, but now, thanks to a special opportunity, they can complete this important milestone in a familiar and comfortable setting. This change is expected to help students feel more at ease, ultimately enhancing their performance.
The program has also adapted to new advancements in dental hygiene practices in Georgia. The Georgia Board of Dentistry recently passed laws allowing dental hygienists to provide local anesthesia and laser therapy for patients. In response, the ASU Dental Hygiene Program has updated its curriculum to include local anesthesia certification, with the Class of 2026 set to be the first graduating class to benefit from this addition. Faculty members plan to become certified in laser therapy this summer, paving the way for this skill to be incorporated into future coursework.
Continuing its commitment to community outreach, the program visited three elementary schools this semester—Lake Park Elementary School, Kinchafoonee Primary School, and International Studies Elementary School. During these visits, ASU students educated children on proper brushing and flossing techniques, what to expect at their first dental visit, and how to choose healthy snacks for strong teeth.
The ASU Dental Hygiene Clinic remains a vital resource for both the university and the broader community. Services offered include dental exams and cleanings, oral cancer screenings, radiographs, fluoride treatments, patient education, and sealants. The clinic welcomes ASU students, faculty, staff, and community members. Fees are set at $20 for children under 18 and senior adults 55 and older, with a fee of $30 for all other adults. Sealants are available for $10 per tooth. Community members can schedule appointments by calling 229-500-2247.
Looking ahead, the dental hygiene students will partner with Dougherty County Head Start and Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures in April to provide free dental screenings and fluoride varnish treatments to more than 100 young children. This marks the program’s third year of participating in this community initiative as part of the Community Dental Health course.
Students in the program have also been inspired by alumni success stories. Afor Carter, a 2014 ASU Dental Hygiene graduate, recently published a book about transitioning from dental hygiene school to clinical practice. She generously donated copies to second-year students and instructors, along with words of encouragement as they approach graduation. Carter, who also earned her Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership from ASU, is now involved in clinical research and part-time dental practice.
Reflecting on her experiences this semester, ASU Dental Hygiene student Carmen Fillingame shared, “Visiting the elementary schools this semester was a beautiful experience! It was fulfilling to extend our knowledge to the children and make a difference in any way possible. The experience of our program is challenging yet rewarding, knowing we are being prepared for our future careers in the best way possible. As a reminder, our clinic is open and welcoming to the community.”
The ASU Dental Hygiene Program continues to make a significant impact through education, service, and innovation.
