Albany State University’s (ASU) University College (UC) recently hosted renowned hip-hop journalist, martial artist, and chess historian Adisa Banjoko for two engaging events focused on the importance of chess, critical thinking, and intellectual representations of self. The events took place on the ASU East Campus and at Sherwood Elementary School, providing the ASU students the opportunity to participate in the UC service activity while serving local area students.
“We were happy to have Mr. Banjoko present in a way that not only enhances the experiences of first-year students at ASU, but also supports our community by building stronger relationships with local elementary schools in our area,” Dr. Tiffany Pogue, University College.
The event at ASU introduced students to the strategic and analytical elements of chess to enhance their critical thinking skills through gameplay. These interactive workshops helped them engage in intellectual discourse while building relationships with their peers, faculty, and staff in a dynamic and inclusive environment.
The Sherwood Elementary School event extended this learning opportunity by allowing ASU students to share their knowledge and skills with young learners. Through this service-learning initiative, ASU reinforced its commitment to community engagement and educational collaboration with the Dougherty County School System.
University College (UC) at Albany State University supports first- and second-year students by helping them transition into college life, explore career paths, and connect their interests with academics. UC provides both academic and non-academic support, fostering a dynamic and engaging learning community. Students benefit from small class sizes, study abroad and internship opportunities, on-campus work experiences, and various academic and student engagement activities.
