Friday, January 24th, 2025
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr., (GA-02) was reappointed to three subcommittees on the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Appropriations for the 119th Congress. At the start of every Congress, the House and Senate establish committee and subcommittee membership. Congressman Bishop will serve on House Appropriations Committee on the following, influential subcommittees:
-
Agriculture, Rural Development, Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and Related Agencies
-
Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies
-
Financial Services and General Government
He will serve as the top Democrat on the Agriculture, Rural Development, FDA, and Related Agencies subcommittee.
Agriculture contributes $1 trillion to the U.S. economy with over $80 billion of that in Georgia alone according to the University of Georgia Center for Agribusiness & Economic Development. There are 13 military installations in Georgia, including Fort Moore, Marine Corps Logistic Base Albany, and Robins Air Force Base in the Second Congressional District. According to the VA, Georgia is also home to over 690,000 veterans. And, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, billions of financial transactions are processed each year by financial services companies doing business in Georgia.
“It is my honor to continue to serve the people of the Second District and the state of Georgia through these House Appropriations Subcommittees, each of which directly address the top three drivers of Georgia’s economy – agriculture, national defense, and financial services,” said Congressman Bishop. “Through my work on these subcommittees, I will fight to make sure our farmers can continue to produce the highest quality, safest, most abundant, and most economical food, fiber, and medicines in the world; that the U.S. military remains the strongest and most powerful in the world, and that Georgia continues its dominance in processing the bulk of all financial transactions in America.”
The Appropriations Committee oversees discretionary spending for federal departments, agencies, and programs. He earned seniority and subcommittee leadership roles through more than 20 years of service on the committee.
Congressman Bishop will be instrumental in working across the aisle to oversee funding for the full range of federal departments, agencies, and programs. The subcommittees on which he sits oversee federal departments crucial to Georgia such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of the Treasury, some of the Department of Defense, as well as dozens of agencies including the FDA and the Small Business Administration.
