Dougherty County School System Continues to Outperform State in Graduation Rates for 2024

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, October 9th, 2024

The Georgia Department of Education has released the 2024 graduation rates, and the Dougherty County School System (DCSS) has outpaced the state once again. For the fourth year in a row, and the seventh time in eight years, DCSS posted a higher graduation rate than the state average, topping 90% for the first time in district history, compared to Georgia’s 85.4%.

“We’re proud of our students and educators for the tremendous progress they’ve made,” said Superintendent Kenneth Dyer. “Our focus on ensuring that our students are provided rigorous and relevant educational experiences is showing remarkable results.”

Academic Rigor and Relevance is a key part of the district’s strategic plan.

Programs like the district’s Connected2Careers are directly preparing students for in-demand careers while keeping them engaged through real-world learning experiences. Coupled with enhanced tutoring, engaging summer programs, a curriculum that includes programs like computer coding and app development alongside paid internships and work-based learning opportunities in high-demand career fields, the district is graduating students who are more prepared than ever to take control of their futures, whether that involves going to a four-year college, honing their job skills in a technical college environment, going directly into the workforce, or offering themselves for services in the military.

In 2024 alone, the district graduated 124 students who walked across the stage with either an associates degree or technical college certificate (TCC); and 132 who earned an industry-recognized credential in areas such as certified nurse aid assistant or the Six Sigma process improvement methodology. Additionally, the Class of 2024 graduated 136 honor graduates from among the three high schools.

Tuesday’s announcement included a break down by high school which showed that:

  • Westover Comprehensive High School had a rate of 95.7%

  • Dougherty Comprehensive High School had a rate of 88.1%

  • Monroe Comprehensive High School had a rate of 88%

The state average for 2024 was 85.4%.

By offering pathways that align with student interests and local workforce needs, such as construction and healthcare, the district has provided practical, relevant experiences alongside rigorous academic content. These programs have played a crucial role in supporting students and ensuring they not only graduate but are well-prepared for life beyond high school.

With a commitment to blending academic excellence with career readiness, DCSS continues to build on its success, helping more students achieve their educational and career goals.
