Albany Technical College and Albany’s Municipal Court Strengthen Community Ties with Renewed Partnership
Wednesday, May 8th, 2024
Albany Technical College (ATC) and the City of Albany’s Municipal Court are proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) this morning, reinforcing their commitment to community support through innovative legal and educational collaborations, including the Night Court initiative.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Albany Works! (AW!) and Albany Technical College (ATC), signed on February 2018, along with its addendum, outlines a cooperative agreement aimed at enhancing quality of life through educational and support services. The MOU establishes a framework where the Municipal Court, AW!, and ATC collaborate to link individuals aged 18-35 to community resources promoting employment, education, and health services, while considering alternative sentencing like community service.
Dr. Emmett Griswold, President of Albany Technical College, expressed his enthusiasm about the continued partnership, stating, "This renewed partnership exemplifies our dedication to community engagement and education. By hosting Night Court on our campus, we provide not only legal accessibility but also educational opportunities that foster personal growth and community resilience. We are creating an inclusive environment where education and justice intersect to empower our community."
Chief Judge Willie C. Weaver, Sr. highlighted the significance of the initiative: "Today's signing marks a pivotal moment for our community. The Night Court initiative, part of this MOU, extends our court’s reach beyond traditional hours, enhancing our service to the community and alleviating the burden on those we serve. This partnership with Albany Tech is a testament to our shared commitment to serve and uplift our community through innovative and accessible legal and educational pathways."
The MOU solidifies a framework for ongoing collaboration that includes hosting Night Court sessions at Albany Technical College, thereby making legal processes more accessible and integrated with educational programs. This initiative is designed to benefit those who may struggle with regular court hours and supports the broader goal of community and workforce development.
Albany Technical College and the Municipal Court look forward to seeing the positive outcomes from their continued collaboration, which promises to strengthen community bonds and support the local population in meaningful ways.
