As April unfolds, so does a powerful movement aimed at combating sexual violence. Across the nation, communities unite to observe Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month, shining a spotlight on the issue of sexual violence.
In recognition of the month, and in support of The Lily Pad, Phoebe employees volunteered at the center that supports victims of sexual abuse and their families.
Angie Barber, Director of Phoebe’s Network of Trust School Health Program was one of those volunteers. "We have loved and supported the Lily Pad since before it was born," she said, emphasizing Phoebe’s commitment to work with the Lily Pad to provide a safe haven for survivors.
As part of its commitment to community service, Phoebe offers employees up to four hours of paid time off each year for approved volunteer service. On Tuesday, April 2, Phoebe employees led a Chalk the Walk effort at the Lily Pad, turning sidewalks leading to the center into a vibrant pathway of support by decorating them with messages of awareness, hope and prevention. Once the chalk dust settled, powerful affirmations and slogans provided visual evidence of solidarity and resilience.
"Let us reaffirm our commitment to building a community where survivors are not just heard but empowered, and where every step towards healing is met with compassion and support. Together, through advocacy and action, we can create a future free from the shadows of sexual violence," said Jen Williams, PhD, Phoebe’s Chief Diversity, Inclusion & Community Benefit Officer.
Chalk the Walk is a national effort to break the silence surrounding sexual violence by creating an inclusive culture rooted in empathy and understanding, encouraging laughter among participants while their efforts may inspire change for survivors and uphold survivors' rights.
The LilyPad, a symbol of hope and healing, stands as a symbol of support for those affected by sexual violence. Through collaborative efforts and unwavering dedication, advocates like Phoebe’s volunteers, continue to work together to prevent sexual violence and support those who have endured it.
“Phoebe has been such a great partner and so supportive of our mission for many years. Thanks to Phoebe, we have a building that allows us to provide the vital services our community needs,” said Mary Martinez, Lily Pad Executive Director. “As we work to spread awareness and prevent sexual assault, we appreciate all our community partners who stand with us and make a difference.”
