A young Phoebe hospice nurse, described as an “angel” by the family of a patient at Willson Hospice House, is Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital’s DAISY Award winner for the month of March.

The DAISY Award is an international program that celebrates the extraordinary clinical skills and compassionate care provided by nurses every day. Layne Fulghum's commitment to her patients and their families stood out, earning her this esteemed recognition.

Reflecting on her award, Fulghum expressed profound gratitude, saying, "Every opportunity I've been given to care for our patients and their families during this sacred stage of their journey, is truly a blessing for me. I'm so thankful I'm able to witness the purest form of love that most never see. Though my career has just started, I have no doubt I'm exactly where I have been called to be."

Fulghum's nomination came from the daughter of a patient who experienced exceptional care at the Willson Hospice House during her final days. The daughter said Fulghum provided comfort, dignity and support, not only to her mother, but to the entire family.

According to the nomination letter, Fulghum's kindness, compassion and attentiveness were evident in every interaction. She ensured the patient's comfort with each medication administration and anticipated their needs, providing solace even in moments of decline.

"We were so thankful that Layne was the nurse when mom transitioned to be with Jesus. She truly made things easier for both mom and us," the family expressed in their heartfelt nomination.

The DAISY Foundation, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, recognizes nurses who make a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families. At a ceremony attended by colleagues, physicians, patients and visitors, Fulghum received a certificate commending her as an "Extraordinary Nurse" and a meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch.

For Fulghum, the recognition serves as a reminder of the impact nurses can have, even in the toughest moments. "There will always be hard days, but even on the worst ones, I’m beyond thankful to have an incredible teacher, mentor and most importantly, friend, which makes even the toughest days a little more tolerable," she shared.

The DAISY Award is a symbol of Fulghum's extraordinary commitment to caring for patients and families during their most vulnerable moments. Her dedication exemplifies the true spirit of nursing and is a source of inspiration to her colleagues and the community.
