Albany State University (ASU) experienced growth for the third consecutive year. Spring Enrollment for the 2023/2024 academic year has increased by 3.3% compared to last year, with an additional 192 students joining the thriving community.

ASU has achieved the highest increase in retention rates among all National Institute for Student Success (NISS) partner institutions in the USG. According to the USG by the Numbers Retention Rates Reports, ASU's year-over-year overall retention numbers saw a remarkable 14.9% increase from 61.9% in 2022 to 76.8% in 2023 for both full and part-time Bachelor’s degree-seeking students.

The university’s retention rates for first-time, full-time freshmen have continued a positive trend, with 78.4% of bachelor’s degree-seeking freshmen returning to continue their academic careers. Again, this is the highest increase of NISS partner institutions in the USG at 10.3%.

Both increased enrollment and growing retention rates can be attributed to the hard work and dedication to student success of ASU’s faculty, staff, and students. Programs implemented to ensure that students have a successful college experience were integral in Fall enrollment gains and have helped sustain enrollment and retention by allowing them to have an active role in their education and college experience.

One such program is University College, which was implemented in 2022 to effectively prepare first-year students for university-level expectations, bridge the gap between first-year students’ natural interests and academic success, and promote on-time graduation in every major. There are 15 student learning communities, such as groups tailored to first-generation college student entrepreneurs, their future career fields, and more. 

Under President Marion Ross Fedrick’s leadership, the University has focused on student success and academic excellence. The focus on student well-being is evident through the comprehensive transition programs designed to ensure incoming students seamlessly adapt to the ASU experience. Throughout the semester, students receive training and development opportunities to enhance their skills as self-regulated learners. Moreover, dedicated faculty and staff provide individualized support in study strategies, time management, and achieving a healthy college-life balance. ASU also nurtures the growth of student leaders by expanding their academic networks, connecting them with vital campus resources, and guiding them in shaping their unique leadership identity.

The university will continue to implement and utilize programs as a commitment to foster student success and academic excellence and to enhance the overall student experience.
