Albany Sees Slight Uptick in Unemployment While Job Numbers Soar

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Albany recorded an unemployment rate of 4.2 percent in June, up two-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 4.2 percent.
“The bedrock of a thriving economy lies in maintaining low unemployment, but equally essential is striking the right balance between job growth and a capable workforce that can meet the evolving needs of Georgia’s industries,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “This well-balanced approach ensures businesses of all sizes have the talent they need to grow and succeed."
The labor force increased in Albany by 127 and ended the month with 65,416. That number went up by 576 when compared to June of 2022.
Albany finished the month with 62,698 employed residents. That number increased by 52 over the month and rose by 611 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Albany ended June with 63,600 jobs. That number increased by 300 from May to June and rose by 1,700 when compared to this time last year.
In June, initial unemployment claims decreased by 11 (-3%) in Albany. When you compare June 2023 claims to June 2022, claims were down by 104 (-25%).
