MetroPower hosts Construction Career Day for Lee County High School

Staff Report

Wednesday, April 12th, 2023

On Thursday morning from 9:00 AM – noon, Lee County High School students will descend upon the campus of MetroPower. During the second annual Career Day field trip, Mr. John Wanner’s construction students will get acquainted with different construction trades offered at the company. While there, they can get their hands on a few aspects of each job available at MetroPower.

There will be approximately 30 students from Lee County that will be split into 9 groups. Students will be able to try on an electrical related trade for about 20 minutes at each station to see if it piques their interest. Teams will rotate and visit each table, watch demonstrations, and participate in a learning exercise for each trade. Some students will have the opportunity to go on to participate, later this year, in competitions such as: Construction Ready Awards and AGC Skills Challenge, where they compete against students from regional schools for a chance to win equipment, tools or scholarships to further their education within the construction industry.

Nine different tables will be set up for each different Electrical division represented, which will include:

  • Electrical Service – Residential & Commercial

  • Automation & Controls

  • Underground Electrical

  • Low Voltage – HVAC Controls, FA wiring & Data Cabling

  • Fire Sprinklers & Alarms

  • Plumbing

  • Safety

  • Marketing

  • Human Resources
