ASU President Marion Ross Fedrick: Reflecting on the Passing Dr. Anthony Parker
Thursday, June 9th, 2022
“There are some who bring a light so great to the world, that even after they have gone, the light remains.” J. Garrison.
This week, our community has lost a bright light with the passing of Dr. Anthony Parker, President of Albany Technical College. Dr. Parker’s light and legacy will forever shine through the lives of his family, community, students, and friends.
Dr. Parker’s leadership and service as president of Albany Tech spanned over 25 years. His lifetime commitment to post-secondary education and workforce development throughout the region and state of Georgia was unmatched.
A celebrated change agent, he understood the power of education. Dr. Parker is known for his pioneering efforts in workforce design and transformation and developing community partnerships that paved the way for brighter futures.
He was a giant who walked softly, cared deeply, and shared of himself selflessly with the world around him. Through his quiet and unassuming presence, he taught others to honor their victories, learn from their losses, and embody the mission they are charged to lead.
This is a lesson that Dr. Parker reminded me of often as my mentor, and my friend. Personally, I will forever be grateful for his unyielding support as a champion, role model and a colleague. In his infinite wisdom, Dr. Parker always stressed the weight of the responsibility for every decision made today, because of its potential impact on future generations.
“Marion, commit early and remain committed to the journey,” is just one of the many pieces of advice that will continue to guide me, but also serve as a reminder of how he lived his life.
Dr. Parker illuminated every space that he entered, and through his example, he encouraged others to do the same. The community mourns the loss of an influential leader, and advocate, and I join them in mourning the loss of my mentor and friend.
On behalf of Albany State University’s entire campus community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Albany Technical College family, his lovely wife Sandra, their three children, and a host of other colleagues and friends. May Dr. Parker’s legacy continue to live on in his work, and the countless lives he changed.
