Georgia DOT Awards $77.4 Million in Construction Contracts in December

Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) awarded 17 construction contracts for statewide transportation projects totaling $75,960,935. In addition, $1.5 million was awarded in a design-build project.
The largest single investment, worth approximately $39.2 million, was awarded to E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc to widen and reconstruct 8.07 miles of roadway on US 129/441/State Route 24 from Putnam County line to north of Pierce Dairy Road in Morgan County.
This contract, with one other widening and reconstruction contract, represent 53 percent or $40.6 million of the awarded funds.
The second largest contract, $11.6 million, was awarded to Apac-Atlantic, Inc to resurface 5.93 miles of roadway on Interstate 516/State Route 421 from Mildred Street to west of the CSX railroad tracks in Chatham County.
In addition, a Transportation Investment Act (TIA) project was awarded to The Scruggs Company for asphalt patching, leveling and resurfacing on Boyette Road (County Road 75) from State Route 37 to the Lowndes County line. The $1.5 million contract will also include work on Giddens Road (Royals Road) from Boyette Road (County Road 75) to Teeterville Road in Lanier County. The Apac-Atlantic and TIA contracts, along with six other resurfacing contracts, represent 30 percent or $23.1 million of the awarded funds.
The remaining 17 percent, or $12.1 million, is allotted for safety, bridge construction and bridge rehabilitation projects at various locations throughout the state. Safety contracts consist of pavement marking upgrades and construction of a roundabout at various roadways statewide.
Also let in the month of December were the bid results for the Statewide Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Dynamic Message Sign (DMS) Deployment project from GDOT’s Innovative Delivery Office.
This Design-Build project was awarded to Brooks-Berry-Haynie & Associates, Inc. to install five dynamic message signs on overhead sign structures in Cobb, Cherokee and Chatham counties. Additionally, the $1.5 million contract will include fiber-optic cables, concrete poles with closed circuit television camera units, along with cabinets and pull boxes that will be installed as part of the project.
Design-Build is a method of project delivery in which one entity – the Design-Build team – works under a single contract with Georgia DOT to provide design and construction services. The December awards bring the total construction contracts for Fiscal Year 2021 to $640.2 million. This total includes TIA, Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build and locally administered projects. Fiscal Year 2021 began July 1, 2020.
