New Leadership Program at GSW Identifies Students’ Strengths, Fosters Successful College Experience and future

Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) is implementing a new student leadership development program called CliftonStrengths for Students on campus to help students discover their inner talents, strengths, and gifts. The goal is to foster an environment for students to learn, develop and apply their individual talents to their present and future endeavors.
Since 2002, schools have used Gallup's StrengthsQuest program, now known as CliftonStrengths for Students, to help students identify and understand their unique talents by taking the CliftonStrengths assessment. Out of 34 themes, students receive a report listing their top five most dominant themes of talent. Students then learn how to best apply their strengths to succeed in and out of the classroom.
“This nationally recognized program will help our students tap their natural gifts and strengths to achieve personal goals,” said Laura Boren, vice president for Division of Student Engagement and Success. “Our motivation for this program is to engage students in their personal growth and eventually become a Strengths-Based campus. This effort contributes to our commitment to the University System of Georgia’s Momentum approach.”
Every student has the opportunity to complete the online CliftonStrengths assessment for free. This new leadership program is another approach focused on GSW’s commitment to student success through academic, professional, and social engagement.
When students learn to use their CliftonStrengths, they thrive in their classes, campus roles, and future careers. They leave a positive impact on campus by applying their talents in leadership roles for clubs and organizations. They learn to live within their means now and plan for their financial future. They discover how to live healthy lives, both physically and emotionally. Thriving students are more engaged in their schools helping them to live a better life, on campus and beyond.
During GSW’s Welcome Week back in August, 328 individuals consisting of new freshmen, Storm Spotters and Residential Leaders completed the CliftonStrengths inventory. There are four scheduled seminars this Fall for any GSW student interested in discovering their natural strengths. Students who attend all four workshops receive a certificate of completion and are eligible to complete a facilitator certification program held in the Spring for future workshop leaders.
