Staff Report From Albany CEO

Wednesday, June 12th, 2019

The SOWEGA Council on Aging will host a Positive Approach to Care workshop on June 24 as part of an effort to reach out to those impacted by dementia.

“More and more individuals are living with dementia,” a flyer from the Council on Aging promoting the event said. “The number of individuals diagnosed with dementia will continue to increase, and it is very likely that you will be in contact with someone living with dementia.

“Whether you provide direct or indirect care and support to individuals living with dementia, this workshop is an excellent learning opportunity.”

The workshop is designed to help build awareness and skill for acute care providers, nursing staff, hands-on care partners, certified nursing assistants, family care partners, counselors and professionals who work with or provide care for individuals living with dementia.

“Through this training, professionals and care partners can communicate more effectively and provide quality care and support to individuals living with dementia,” the council said.

The workshop is from 8:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Continuing education is possible for social workers, professional mental health counselors and nurses. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The cost is $30 for professionals obtaining continuing education credit, and $15 for general admission. The deadline to register is June 19. Space is limited, and there will be no refunds.

Teepa Snow created the materials to be used in the workshop and has authorized a certified trainer to facilitate workshops using the materials. For this event, Mary Donelly will be the facilitator.

Individuals can register online at www.sowegacoa.org. For further information, contact Melissa Garrett at (229) 435-6789.
