Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), Chairman of the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies, released the following statement regarding the 1890’s Land-Grant Institutions Agriculture Scholarship Celebration:

“Yesterday, I had the honor of speaking at the celebration commemorating the 1890’s Land-Grant Agriculture Scholarship Fund. Authorization for this program was passed into law last Congress through the Farm Bill, and this year I was proud to include it in the FY 2020 Agriculture Appropriations bill. In total, the program received $50 million, which is $10 million over the request, ensuring success in its inaugural year.

“There is a great need to increase the number of young people, particularly African-Americans, seeking careers in the food and agricultural sciences, including agribusiness, food production, distribution, retailing, energy, renewable fuels, farming marketing, finance, distribution, conservation, sustainability, and technology. The 1890’s Scholarship Program will provide this support and helps lay the foundation for our next generation in the agricultural industry.

“I’m thankful my colleague, Congressman David Scott (GA-13), brought this legislation to the table and would not give up till he got it done. This scholarship program will help enrich the future of farming and keep American agriculture the best in the world.”
