Thomas University’s Art Gallery will feature “Press + Release: Woodcuts by Chris Johnson” in an exhibit Monday, Jan. 14, through Thursday, Feb. 28.
 
“The works on exhibition are selections from a larger series of woodcarvings inspired by ancient and contemporary mythologies,” Johnson said. “I have always been fascinated with the variety of ways an artist can create and reproduce an image using printmaking techniques. By displaying the woodblocks alongside the printed image, a viewer can understand the process of relief printing.”
 
Originally from South Georgia, Johnson now lives in Columbus. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Clemson University in 2008 with a concentration in printmaking. Johnson went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of South Carolina with a concentration in printmaking and drawing in 2011. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia.
 
Located in the Student Life Center on TU’s Magnolia Campus, the Art Gallery is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, and 8 a.m.- noon Fridays. The exhibit is part of Arts for the Community at Thomas University (ACTU).
 
A reception with the artist will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in the gallery. In addition to his woodcuts, Johnson will also discuss his recent works of large-scale public murals throughout Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The exhibit and the reception are open to the public. There is no admission fee.
