Theatre Albany will bring it’s 85th season to a close with “Legally Blonde The Musical” - opening Friday, June 8 and running for seven performances through Sunday, June 17. The musical boasts a cast of more than 30 volunteer performers, and the production team includes Theatre Albany veterans Kelly Walton as Guest Director, Gabriel Lawrence as Music Director, Casey Perkins as Choreographer and Lindsey Stewart as Technical/Stage Manager.

“The show is high-energy from the very first beat until the final bow,” said Walton. “I’m excited to get to work with this great group of performers and co-collaborators!”

Based on the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde - The Musical opened on Broadway, at the Palace Theatre, on April 29, 2007. The production was directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, and the original Broadway cast included Laura Bell Bundy in the lead role of Elle Woods and featured Christian Borle, Orfeh and Michael Rupert. The show received many positive reviews and was nominated for seven Tony Awards.

“Legally Blonde The Musical, follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances - this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal!” Music Theatre International describes the show’s story: “Elle Woods appears to have it all, but her life is turned upside down when her boyfriend Warner dumps her so he can attend Harvard Law.

Determined to get him back, Elle charms her way into the prestigious law school. While there, she struggles with peers, professors and her ex. With the support of some new friends, though, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world.”

Theatre Albany board president Kelly Mullins feels the production of Legally Blonde is an important part of a ‘new era’ for Theatre Albany. “We have had a lot of transitions and growth this season,” said Mullins. “The board - along with our dedicated patrons and volunteers - are extremely optimistic about the direction this organization is moving. We are planning another great season for 2018/2019 and encourage our community to check out our shows and events and support this awesome asset to the Albany-area arts community.”
