Dougherty County Storm Recovery Check Presentation July 24th
Friday, July 21st, 2017
Dougherty County received its initial reimbursement grant of more than $3.6 million for cleanup and recovery costs associated with severe weather that hit the county in January of this year. Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency will present the check on July 24, 2017 to Dougherty County Commission Chairman Chris Cohilas.
Dougherty County was one of 22 counties to receive a Presidential Declaration for DR-4297 due to the extent of the damages caused by tornadoes and strong winds. GEMA/HS worked closely with Cohilas, County Assistant Administrator Michael McCoy and many others throughout the grant process. The grant covers eligible debris removal and personnel and equipment costs related to the storm, which left downed trees and debris scattered throughout the county, causing widespread power loss.
“We are pleased to be able to help Dougherty County receive this grant to reduce the financial burden the tornadoes placed on the community. The ultimate goal is to restore the community to a stronger more resilient state,” said GEMA/HS Director Homer Bryson.
The grant is funded through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance Grant program. Public assistance grants are awarded by FEMA after receiving applications from the state, which coordinates the process with local governments.
