Roughly a dozen military and civilian men from Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany joined other prominent males from the community to bond with young boys during the 5th annual "Ties that Bind" event, June 15, held at the Phoebe Northwest Conference Center, Albany, Georgia.

The keynote speaker, Col. James C. Carroll, commanding officer, MCLB Albany, shared his personal life experiences and encouraged the young men to "stay the course, dream, stay out of trouble and stay in school."

"Do not let obstacles determine your successes in life. I stand before you today as proof that with hard work, dedication and commitment, whatever you desire to achieve in life, it's possible," he said.

Sgt. Maj. Johnny Higdon, base sergeant major, MCLB Albany, said it was an instant connection (with the youth) because he was able to see himself in the young men he spoke with.

"It was great to see so many prominent (men) from all areas of the community volunteer their time to mentor youth and provide guidance and encouragement as they prepare themselves for the challenges of adulthood," he said.

Darrel Sabbs, program coordinator, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, said having the Marines and other prominent men attend this event each year makes a huge difference in the lives of these young men most of whom come from single-parent households headed by females.

"I'm not sure how I'm going to follow this year’s speaker though," he said laughing. "The colonel was awesome and is going to be a tough act to follow."
