FEMA Extends Dougherty Co. Registration

Staff Report From Albany CEO

Wednesday, March 29th, 2017

Although the final day of FEMA’s physical presence in Dougherty County has passed, there is hope for residents seeking help in recovering from the storm devastation. Those still in need of assistance are
encouraged to visit www.DisasterAssistance.gov, download the FEMA mobile app, or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. Residents will be able to speak with a real person about their family’s needs, and request additional assistance, including SBA disaster loan applications. The new deadline for county citizens to register is no later than Friday, May 26, 2017.

In addition to FEMA registration, citizens should also complete the Small Business Administration loan application. If a homeowner or renter is denied by SBA, they will be referred back to FEMA for additional grant consideration.

Homeowners with insurance may receive a letter saying they are not qualified for assistance at this time. This usually means FEMA will need to identify what the homeowner's insurance will cover in an effort to not duplicate FEMA benefits.

To date, more than $11 million in federal assistance has been provided.  FEMA has given $3.3 million in grants to more than 800 homeowners and renters for losses not covered by insurance. The Small Business Administration has approved more than $8 million in disaster loans for homeowners, renters, and small businesses.
