Jimmy, Rosalynn Carter to Celebrate Presidents’ Day in Plains
Tuesday, February 14th, 2017
South Georgia residents will have a chance to spend part of Presidents’ Day with a president on Monday.
Because of a schedule change, former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter will celebrate Presidents’ Day on Monday at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains, officials with the historic site said.
At 11 a.m. on Presidents’ Day, the Carters will be at the auditorium at Plains High School, 300 N. Bond St., where they will share with the audience their personal experiences in regard to the Camp David Accords.
The Camp David Accords, a high point in the Carter presidency, were signed on Sept. 17, 1978, by Carter, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. After the first day of the 13-day summit, Sadat and Begin did not meet during negotiations, with Carter acting as go-between for the two presidents.
After adoption by the Egyptian and Israeli governments, the accord led to a ceremony in Washington the following March in which Egypt and Israel signed a treaty that formally ended the 31-year war between the two nations.
Seating for the program starts at 10 a.m. Monday and will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservations accepted, officials with the National Park Service said.
After the program, the Carters will be available to sign copies of their books. Park Service officials say a maximum of two books per attendee will be signed and that the Carters will only sign books they have authored. The Eastern National Bookstore at the high school will have copies of their books available for purchase.
Schools that would like to connect to the event for classroom distance learning should contact [email protected].
The event is free and open to the public.
On Sunday, Carter also is scheduled to teach Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church, 148 Georgia Highway 45 North, Plains.
Carter’s Sunday school class starts at 10 a.m. and is preceded by an orientation period at 9 a.m. Seating there also is on a first-come, first-seated basis. The church building opens at 7:30 a.m. Carter’s Sunday school schedule is subject to change, and updated information can be found at the church’s website, www.mbcplains.org.
At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, a lecture by Dr. Larry Cook, who will speak on, “Little Known Facts and Personal Stories of our Avid Fishermen Presidents,” is set for the Plains High School auditorium.
Cook is a lifelong collector of presidential memorabilia and a presidential historian who specializes in little-known facts and the personal side of the presidency. Cook will be available to sign his book “Presidential Coincidences, Amazing Facts and Collectibles” afterward. Copies of his book also will be available for purchase in the Eastern National Bookstore.
