Grow Albany Initiative Started to Replant Trees Lost in Storm

Staff Report From Albany CEO

Friday, January 20th, 2017

In an effort to replace trees lost in the storm of January 2, 2017, organizations in Albany have founded the Grow Albany initiative. Through the work of volunteers and partnerships with Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful, Dougherty County and the City of Albany, Grow Albany will plant and distribute trees to our public parks, businesses and homes through a multi-year, multiphase initiative.

“Our community experienced a great tragedy. It wasn’t just a loss to property and landscape; it was a loss of identity. Our trees are at the center of how we identify with Albany. Through this storm we have seen our faith and spirit of community revitalized. It’s that spirit and commitment to Albany and our neighbors that we need to continue to grow as we step forward to rebuild together,” said Bárbara Rivera Holmes, President and CEO of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We have received a ton of calls about starting to raise money to replant the trees we lost. Instead of several different efforts that could do minor improvements we thought it would be great to put the full weight and commitment of businesses, residents and volunteers together,” said Judy Bowles, Executive Director of Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful.
