Cancer Coalition of South Georgia Undergoing Name Change

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, July 27th, 2016

Effective Monday, the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia will undergo a name change and officially become Horizons Community Solutions as part of a broadened mission to close the gap on health disparities.

Officials said Horizons will continue the fight against cancer already built on the Cancer Coalition’s strong foundation but also will do more to strengthen communities toward greater health and productivity.

Now moving into its 15th year, the Cancer Coalition has been actively involved in the battle against cancer. The organization has received recognition nationally and statewide for its programs and research, work which officials said will continue.

“However, we realized that we must address the underlying causes of disparities in order to achieve long-term wellness in our rural communities,” said Cancer Coalition CEO Diane Fletcher. “By improving areas such as education, housing and work force development, we can help each community create a sustainable ‘culture of wellness.’ Horizons can and will empower community members to lead healthier and more productive lives.”

Officials said the Cancer Coalition will continue as a division under the Horizons parent organization.

“(The organization) is stronger and more determined than ever,” said Fletcher. “Much has been accomplished as the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia, but much remains to be done. We’re confident we can make an even greater difference by expanding our mission into these new areas.”

Officials said the organization’s board of directors, staff members, partners and volunteers look forward to the time when disparities – and the associated suffering – are history in south Georgia.

“We remain steadfast in not only our ongoing mission of fighting cancer, but also in our exciting bigger mission of community health,” said Fletcher.
