June is National Homeownership Month: How to Take Part, in Albany

Staff Report From Albany CEO

Thursday, June 9th, 2016

Flint River Habitat for Humanity and longtime partner the NID Housing Counseling Agency (HUD Approved) are celebrating National Homeownership for good reason! National Homeownership Month celebrates those who already homeowners or those hoping to become one, in our community.

Being a homeowner could mean different things to different people. Homeownership can present the opportunity for stable housing and the opportunity to build assets for you and your family. It can improve the physical, mental and financial wellbeing of the owner along with the children in the homes academic and home lives. Homeownership, while it presents additional responsibilities for the homeowner, can reduce the use of public resources and increase community involvement, a “foundation” for a future for you and your family.

“As we celebrate the many benefits of homeownership, there are unforeseen life situations that could take the dream of homeownership and ruin it” says Lauren Welch, Mortgages and Family Services Manager at Flint River Habitat for Humanity. “Whether you currently own your own home or you want to become a homeowner, there are important things to take note of.”

Free help applying for foreclosure assistance or mortgage payment programs, along with housing counseling can be found with Patricia and her staff at the NID Housing Counseling Agency, located at 230 S Jackson Street, on the 1st floor. “If you think that you will need help or know you already do, come meet with us and let us get you connected to whatever resources are out there” says Patricia. “Our office also offers homebuyer workshops, foreclosure prevention classes (June 18) and can meet one-on-one to show you what programs are available for prospective homeowners in our community, like (Flint River) Habitat for Humanity and others”.
