DCSS High School High Tech Participation Ceremony Set for Thursday, May 12th

The DCSS High School High Tech program is held only at Westover High School. The HS/HT program is for students with Disabilities who will potentially attend post-secondary and go to work. Under the guidance of Mrs. Lavonda Gervin, Community Based Instructor, Westover implemented this year the First Annual HS/HT Induction program.
The HS/HT students have participated in various after school Science, Technology, Engineering, Math projects. The ninth grade HSHT students participated in “The Downtown Albany Experience” which involved them visiting the Thronateeska Heritage Center, the Flint RiverQuarium Environmental Education Center, and the Law Enforcement Center. The Eleventh grade HSHT students participated in an extraordinary Mission Quest /Simulation with The Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, GA. The tenth and eleventh grade HS/HT participated in The Wild Adventure Theme park to experiences hands on STEM projects. The senior HS/HT students were allowed to attend all of the HS/HT educational programs. The HS/HT students participated in the Annual Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful “Stash-The-Trash” Litter Pick-Up Event.
All of the students participated in “Self-Advocacy Training” which taught student conservational basics, teamwork and building confidence through body language. Albany Technical College hosted several workshops that students attended. The first on was “Building Strong Teams by working well with others” which was attended by Juniors and Senior in the HS/HT program. This workshop enabled students to identify the types of difficult behaviors and how to cope with challenging behavior. The second workshop was the 2106 Transition Extreme which shares information on transitioning, employment, disability laws, how to get into college as well as a motivational speaker.
Albany ARC serves as a Community Liaison to generate in-kind resources, funding and grants for all aspects of the HS/HT Program. By joining forces with the DCSS, Albany ARC helps to ensure the success of high school students with disabilities.
