Monday, May 9th, 2016
Danette Saylor, vice president of Student Affairs and Success at Albany State University, will serve as an advisory board member for the NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Center for Women.
The NASPA Center for Women explores issues pertinent to women in student affairs, while enhancing development opportunities and encouraging research relevant to women in higher education.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to serve on the NASPA Center for Women board,” Saylor said. “The Center for Women will increase my knowledge of the challenges impacting women in higher education, specifically student affairs and the long-term effects on the sustainability of women leaders. Being introduced to women leaders who are committed in mind and convicted in spirit to resolve these challenges will be a phenomenal privilege.”
Saylor was chosen following a competitive selection process. She will serve a two-year term, which is effective immediately and concludes March 2018. She has served as vice president of Student Affairs and Success at ASU for nearly a year. During her time at ASU, she implemented the “Girls Night In Vice-President's Sleep Over” to inspire and motivate female faculty, staff and students.
“Dr. Saylor is a proven leader. In her first 90-days at ASU she secured nearly $500,000 to support veteran students,” said ASU President Art Dunning. “She continues to establish significant university initiatives. Her knowledge and experience will be a great asset to the NASPA Center for Women.”
Future goals for ASU include the establishment of the Nyota Institute, a 12-month leadership development program with a mission to inspire, empower and transform women; the development of the ASU WISE Program; and, an ASU Women’s Center.
“My genuine desire to become a strong and transformational leader in the field of student affairs fuels the fire I have for being a part of the Center for Women board,” Saylor said. “I believe the relationships developed through my participation will, indeed, be a conduit for attaining the aforementioned goals.”
Saylor is a skilled manager and administrator with more than 17 years of experience in higher education as a disability access and resources director, assistant professor, undergraduate program director and vice president.
A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Saylor earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counselor education from Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, Fla. She earned a Ph.D. in rehabilitation counseling from Florida State University, also in Tallahassee. Saylor was the chair of the NASPA Region III Disability Concerns Knowledge Community from 2014 – 2016 and is currently a member of NASPA’s national Disability Concerns leadership team.
