Friday, April 29th, 2016
A classic tale of star-crossed lovers will soon make its way to Albany State University. The ASU Fine Arts: Speech & Theatre Division will present William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” opening 7: 30 p.m., Thursday, April 28 in the Billy C. Black Auditorium on campus. Performances will continue 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 29 and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 30.
ASU’s adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy is set in New Orleans at the notable Mardi Gras festival. ASU’s rendition will feature a few surprises, including a special appearance by First Lady Karen Baynes-Dunning as Prince of Verona.
“Lots of people already know how Romeo and Juliet will end, but I think they need to know where it starts. There is a sense of excitement and wonder that starts the play,” said John “Ray” Proctor, director of Theatre assistant professor of Speech and Theatre.
The production celebrates the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Worldwide, celebrations commemorating his accomplishments have been planned by many professional and regional theatres, as well as, universities and colleges around the world.
“Romeo and Juliet,” Shakespeare's most popular romantic tragedy, is a timeless story of young passions caught between two feuding families.
“We are at a point in America where it is necessary that we identify and celebrate the humanity, innocence, purity and love of the African American experience,” Proctor said. “We must highlight and take pride in our facility with language and commitment to excellence, particularly in the areas of the fine and liberal arts. We are a part of a global tapestry that includes everything from Lorraine Hansberry to Tennessee Williams, Amiri Baraka and William Shakespeare.”
General admission to the production is $5. Tickets are available at the door. Admission is free for ASU students, faculty and staff with proper ASU ID.
