Austin Duncan has been named Darton State College 2016 Academic Recognition Student. He will represent Darton State College, along with a student from every college in the University System of Georgia, at the All Georgia Luncheon on Thursday, March 3, 2016.
“I never planned on attending college,” said Austin Duncan. “From then to now being named Darton State College 2016 Recognition Student is an honor.”
Duncan’s motivation of consistently obtaining knowledge inspired him to seek out a degree, it was the proximately and military friendly status that led him to selecting Darton State College. He spent four years away from his family while he was in the Navy, choosing Darton allowed him to be closer to them and begin his journey to his degree.
In Spring 2016, Duncan will cross the stage as he graduates from Darton State College. He is currently applying to other University System of Georgia institutions in pursuit of a Bachelor’s in Computer Science. His long-term goal is to work with artificial intelligence.
According to Dr. Thomas Ormond, Interim Provost/Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs at Darton State College, Duncan was recommended by several of the school Deans as a standout student in and out of the classroom.
Duncan participates on campus as a member of PHI THETA KAPPA, SIGMA KAPPA DELTA, Military Student Organization, MESA, Servant Leadership, Honor Club and Program and is currently a SGA Senator. He is also a recipient of the Dr. Galina Soboleva Memorial Scholarship and Military Scholarship.
“To me education is empowerment, it is enlightenment, it is a path to a better future for myself and it provides me the ability to help brighten the future of others,” said Duncan.
Duncan will be attending the All Georgia Luncheon with Dr. Richard Carvajal, Interim President, and Dr. Craig Flower, Dean of the School of Science, Mathematics, and Computing.
