Albany State University College of Business professor, Kathaleena Edward Monds, participated in one of Australia’s top business school’s Green Business International Sustainability Program.
The unique program, hosted by the University of Queensland in Australia and the Centers for International Business Education and Research at The University of Connecticut and San Diego State University is designed to teach academics and business leaders how industry leaders are applying environmental, social and economic practices to become more profitable, efficient and sustainable.
“Albany State University students are very fortunate to have Dr. Monds as a faculty member. She had the ambition to pursue this grant to enable her to incorporate Green Business practices into the curriculum,” said Albany State University College of Business Dean, Alicia Jackson. “Our students will gain skill sets that set them apart from students who have not had formal instruction in helping businesses meet environmental challenges.”
Monds, professor of information systems, and co-director of the Albany State University College of Business Center for Economic Education/Small and Minority Entrepreneurship, is teaching students in her international business class about environmental issues, such as the benefits of recycling and the dangers electronics cause to the soil and water when they end up in landfills.
“CIBER participation is an excellent way to garner important skills to bring to the classroom,” Monds said. “Participating in the Green Business initiative is essential to learning about the important role that reducing, reusing and recycling plays in developing sustainable businesses. As an information systems professor, I think it image007.pngis imperative that students learn about e-waste and important recycling factors when investing in hardware and personal gadgets."
During her stay in Sidney and Brisbane, Monds and her counterparts from North Carolina Wesleyan College, Southern University and A&M College, Northeastern University and sponsoring schools, visited the University of New South Wales where head of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Stephen Foster, delivered a presentation about Low Carbon Living and the implementation of sustainable technologies in civil engineering.
Monds holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Spelman College in Atlanta, a master’s degree in computer science from Wayne State University in Detroit, a master’s degree in economics and entrepreneurship from the University of Delaware in Newark, and a doctorate in instructional technology from Wayne State University.
