Albany Museum of Art Offers First Friday Events for Families
Thursday, November 5th, 2015
The Albany Museum of Art holds special events every first Friday morning of the month from 10 to 11AM: Adventures in Art and Coffee with the Curator.
With Adventures is Art, parents can enjoy Coffee with the Curator while children ages 3 to 5 discover art and the museum through activities designed for early learners. Examples of art experiences: various types of painting, collage, drawing, building sculpture, printmaking, etc. The fee is $5 per child or free with museum membership.
Reservations for Adventures in Art are required by 5 p.m. the Wednesday prior to the event.
Michael Mallard, AMA trustee and Assistant Professor of Art at Darton State College, is the instructor for Adventures in Art. Mallard’s goal is for children to leave with “positive feelings about themselves, a cognitive introduction to art, and a desire to come back.”
Mallard also believes that there is a real importance about why children of these ages should participate in art.
“Open ended art experiences use and exercise the whole brain. Art uses creative parts of the brain that can be underdeveloped in today's educational system,” said Mallard. The November 6th Coffee with the Curator will be led by Ralph Harvey, artist and Professor Emeritus at Georgia Southwestern State University. Harvey will discuss his work on display in the current exhibition Ralph Harvey Retrospective: A History of Studio Glass in the Rural South.
Complimentary coffee and stimulating conversation is also available for visitors during this time
