Senator Isakson Votes to Defund Planned Parenthood, Keep Government Open

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Friday, September 25th, 2015

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today released the following statement after voting for legislation that would fund the government through fiscal year 2016 while stripping funding for Planned Parenthood and redirecting those funds to women’s health care centers across the country to ensure that there is no reduction in funding for women’s health.

“The government should not be funding Planned Parenthood or any abortions in the first place,” said Senator Isakson. “It is Congress’ responsibility to keep the government open and provide critical funding for our troops and our veterans, along with other important provisions for America and for Georgia. I cast my vote today to keep the government funded, protect women’s health, and see to it that no tax dollars go to an organization that participates in the abhorrent activities of Planned Parenthood.

“I am disappointed and astonished that Democrats have chosen to once again stand in the way of legislation to fund the federal government. President Obama and Senate Democrats have demonstrated that they are willing to shut down the government and cut off essential funding for our national defense, just to protect taxpayer subsidies for Planned Parenthood. This is not the end of this debate, and I will continue to fight to stop using hardworking taxpayers’ money to fund Planned Parenthood.”

In light of the gruesome video footage detailing Planned Parenthood’s role in the harvesting of the organs of unborn babies, Isakson joined Senate Republicans in calling on the administration to launch an investigation into the practices of Planned Parenthood. Isakson is an also original co-sponsor of legislation, S.1881, which would defund Planned Parenthood and redirect those funds to other eligible entities to provide important women’s health care services.
